Scholastic Preview: 10/06/12

Saturday, October 6 is arguably the busiest weekend for the Marching Arts in Michigan. Five Scholastic Competitions will be being held, in addition to two MCBA show and a BOA Regional.

The Scholastic Competitions for October 6 are: Gull Lake, Grand Haven, Brandon, Hastings, and Cedar Springs’ Red Flannel Festival.

Red Flannel Festival

Cedar Springs hosts their Scholastic Competition as part of the Cedar Springs Red Flannel Festival this Saturday. The competition, located at the High School (204 E. Muskegon Street NE), begins at 9:00 AM. Following the competition, there will be a parade in Downtown Cedar Springs, which begins at 3:00 PM. 

The Cedar Springs 8th Grade Band will perform the National Anthem at 9:00 AM. Kent City begins competition at 9:15 in Class D. Fremont performs in Class C at 10:00 AM. After a 15 minute break, the competition switches gear slightly. Tri-County, Greenville, and Mona Shores perform in judged exhibition (they will not receive scores). There will be a lunch break at 11:15 AM. Class A competition starts at 12:00 PM with Portage Northern. Following a 15 minute break, Big Rapids will compete in Class B at 1:00. Cedar Springs performs their 2012 show, “2012” at 1:15, followed by the Grand Valley State University Marching Band at 1:30. Awards will be held at 1:45 PM.

Tickets for the competition are $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. Programs will be available for $2.

If you’re inclined for parades and have an affinity for Red Flannel, consider making your way to Downtown Cedar Springs (only a few blocks north of the High School). According to the Cedar Springs Band Website, All Band Units in the parade will enter the parade at the corner of Muskegon and Main. The parade begins at 3:00 PM. Bands competing in the Competition that will be in the Parade include (in parade performance order):

  • Grand Valley State University Marching Band
  • Cedar Springs
  • Cedar Springs 8th Grade Band
  • Tri-County
  • Big Rapids
  • White Cloud
 

Brandon

The Brandon Blackhawks from Ortonville host 9 bands at their stadium, located at 1025 S. Ortonville Road this Saturday. The Blackhawks will perform the National Anthem at 10:15 AM, with competition starting as Goodrich takes the field in Class B at 10:30.

Class A competition begins at 10:45 with Holly. At 11:45, there will be a 15 minute break, and Class A competition resumes at 12:00 PM with Dakota. Gibraltar Carlson performs at 12:45, wrapping up competition. Brandon performs “MEDUSA” at 1:00 PM, with Awards taking place at 1:30.

Gull Lake

Gull Lake is hosting 7 bands at their competition in Richland, which starts at 1:00PM.

Class D competition begins at 1:00 PM with River Valley, and concludes after Decatur’s performance at 1:15. Class C features Constantine at 1:30. There will be a 15 minute break before Sturgis takes the field in Class B at 2:00. Otsego performs at 2:15 and finishes Class B competition. Class A consists of Battle Creek Central at 2:30, and Mattawan at 2:45. Gull Lake will present “Gangsta Jazz” in exhibition at 3:00, with awards occurring at 3:15 PM.

This competition is held at the Gull Lake campus, which is located at 9550 M-89 in Richland.

Hastings

Hastings happens to be the largest Scholastic Competition this weekend, with 20 bands scheduled to perform. The competition beings at 2:00 PM and is located at 520 West South Street in Hastings.

Six bands compete in Class D, with Martin beginning competition at 2:00 PM, and Gobles rounding out competition at 3:15. There will be a 15 minute break between Class D and C. Class C starts at 3:45 PM with Springport. Coloma finishes Class C competition, performing at 4:45. Class D and C awards will take place at 5:00 PM.

Competition resumes with Class B at 6:00 as Wayland Union takes the field. Edwardsburg performs at 6:15, and Ionia is at 6:30. There will be a 15 minute break at 6:45, and Class A competition begins with Battle Creek Lakeview at 7:00. There will be a 15 minute break at 7:45. Kalamazoo Central is the last to perform in competition at 8:15. Hastings performs “…Moving On” in exhibition at 8:30. Awards for Class B and A will occur at 8:45 PM.

Grand Haven

10 Bands, including our Featured Band of the Week, Fennville, will be performing in Grand Haven on Saturday. The event starts at 5:50 PM with a presentation of the National Anthem.

Competition begins with Class C at 6:00 PM. Fennville, our Featured Band this week, performs “A Tribute to MOTOWN” at 6:30 PM.  There will be a 15 minute break between classes at 7:00. DeWitt begins competition in Class A at 7:15. Hudsonville performs in Class AA at 8:15, and Grand Haven performs in exhibition at 8:30, with Awards for All Classes at 8:50 PM.

Tickets for Grand Haven are $5 for Adults, $3 for Students and Seniors. Children under 5 are admitted free.

Grand Haven High School is located at 17001 Ferris Street in Grand Haven.
