Looking to be a Cooler Weekend [September 30, 2017]

After what was easily the hottest day for fall marching band that I can remember, it’s nice to know going into this weekend, that the forecast is to be cooler! From shorts to jackets in one short week; Michigan always surprises us! This Saturday, there are five contests that we’re reporting on.

Knight Time Classic

Kenowa Hills hosts their annual Knight Time Classic in Grand Rapids this Saturday. The event starts at 10:30 AM, and features nine bands in competition, representing all classes. During the lunch break this year, Genesis Indoor Percussion will be providing entertainment. Lunch is from 12:00-1:00PM. Kenowa Hills closes out competition at 2:45PM, with a performance of their show, Nightwatch.

Kenowa Hills HS is located at 3825 Hendershot Avenue NW, Grand Rapids MI, 49544. See the schedule here.

While not themselves competitive, Pontiac hosts their annual marching invitational for area corps-style bands. Despite reaching out to Pontiac, we were unable to obtain a formal schedule. We do know that ten bands will be competing, and the stated start time is 1:00PM. Anchor Bay has stated their performance time is 3:45PM. Based on this, we expect there is a break somewhere in the event.

Tickets are $5/person; $20/family. Pontiac ISD students are admitted free with student ID.

Find Pontiac located at 441 Cesar E Chavez Ave., Pontiac, MI 48342. See the event page here.

The Otsego Bulldogs play host to twenty bands this weekend; all classes are represented. This competition begins at 2:55PM. Awards for Classes D and C are at 5:15PM. Awards for Classes B, A, and AA (9:30PM) follow Otsego’s exhibition performance of March Off the Earth.

Tickets cost $6 for all spectators. Locate Otsego at 550 Washington St., Otsego MI, 49078. See the schedule here.

Spectacular Spectacular

Carlson High School hosts their annual Spectacular Spectacular competition in Gibraltar this Saturday. The event starts at 3:00PM, and nine bands will be attending in competition (representing classes C, B, and A). Carlson performs in exhibition at 5:30PM; awards will be at 5:45PM.

Lake Orion

Lake Orion hosts their inaugural MCBA competition this Saturday. Eight bands will be in attendance, representing Flights III, II, and I. Additionally, Rochester Stony Creek joins the competition to perform in Open Class – a judged exhibition class (no scores announced). The event starts at 6:35PM, and will conclude after Lake Orion’s exhibition performance of Eternal Winter (9:00PM). Awards for all Flights will be at 9:30PM.

Lake Orion is located at 495 East Scripps Road, Lake Orion, MI 48360. Admission is the MCBA standard: $8 for Adults; $6 for Students/Seniors. Spectators are asked to use Scripps Road to access parking. See the schedule plus parking map here.

We want to wish the best of luck to all competing bands this weekend.
