September 20 Competitions

This Saturday, September 20, marks the official start to the competitive season in Michigan. While there were MCBA- and SMB-sanctioned events last weekend, we will see our first scores of 2014 this weekend. Over 50 bands will perform their competitive shows this Saturday.

 

MCBA: Novi

Novi hosts the first competitive MCBA competition Saturday. The first band, Berkley (in Open class), performs at 4:30 PM. Opening ceremonies will be around 4:20 PM. Each Flight has representatives here:

Flight IV (2) begins at 4:45 PM
Flight III (3) begins at 5:15 PM
Flight II (6) begins at 6:15 PM
Flight I (4) begins at 8:15 PM
Novi performs in Exhibition at 9:15 PM
Awards will be at 9:45 PM

Scholastic: Trenton

Trenton gets the distinction of hosting of the first competitive Scholastic competition of 2014. Their contest opens at 2:00 PM with a performance of the National Anthem by the Boyd Arthurs Middle School Band. Classes B, A, and C are represented at Trenton:

Class B (3) begins at 2:15 PM
Class A (5) begins at 3:00 PM
Class C (5) begins at 4:30 PM
Trenton performs in Exhibition at 5:45 PM
Awards will be at 6:15 PM

Scholastic: Rockford

While Trenton gets the claim for the first Scholastic competition, Rockford has the largest competition this weekend. Opening ceremonies at Rockford will occur at 4 PM. We know that Admission costs will be $7 for individual adult; $5 for individual student or senior; and $20 for family (two adults plus children). One program is included in the cost of admission; additional programs are $2.

Class D competition begins at 4:05 PM
Class C will begin at 4:35 PM
Class B begins at 5:30 PM
Class D, C, and B awards will be at 6:30 PM
Class A begins at 7:00 PM
Rockford performs in exhibition at 8:45 PM
Class A awards will be at 9:00 PM

Scholastic: Whitehall

This Saturday is, by our records, Whitehall’s first time hosting a scholastic event. Whitehall’s invitational will be a clinic-format event. Instead of receiving scores, bands will perform and receive feedback and time to workshop elements of their shows. Montague, Fremont, Mona Shores, Grand Haven, and Whitehall will each receive 30 minutes to perform their shows. This event starts at 4:00 PM, and will have closing cereonies at 6:30 PM.
